Had to read this book in class years ago.
Hated it then.
Hate it now.
I don’t really understand why they have us read books like this one and Lord of the Flies in school but I promise NONE of us understood or cared about it in middle school.
Maybe some did, good for them.
I think as an adult maybe this book makes more sense, I still wouldn’t read it though.
I know what purpose it serves, I understand it’s an important message, I agree with the message too!
I just didn’t like the book.
George Orwell makes important stories, no question there.
This book has also been banned in tyrannical countries so… YES it IS a good and important book. However, not for me and not really interesting in middle school.
This dark style of writing, this bleakness and sadness that coats each page. Like there’s an ever present, dark cloud overhead. Unmovable and haunting.
I hate feeling like that while reading and I most certainly didn’t care for it when I was a kid.
I think books like this and others they forced us to read in school was a big part of why I hated reading as a teenager. Now as an adult I have rediscovered a love for it, realizing that books are far more enjoyable than initially thought
So as a note to teachers, if you gotta make the kids read this book in class… give them something fun to read alongside it because these are just awful as a child.
