I would give this 3 1/2 stars for sure if I could. Just not sure I'm excited about it enough to give it 4. But I enjoyed this, and I'm getting into the story more as the books progress. I'm very curious to see what happens in the next installments, the big story overall. Interesting ideas.

This was a really good sequel. I'm starting to understand better what's going on, Catherine Fisher does a really good job hinting at who/what the Maker's were and how they came to be there. Definitely worth the money and time.

Disclaimer: I found the first book rather interesting, granted I kept on trying to compare it to Catherine Fisher's Incarceron and Sapphique. This time around, I tried my best not to compare with her previous work. It helped, ALOT. I found my read through of the second book in the Relic Master Series: The Lost Heiress to be fantastic!

Review:

Characters (4/5): The characterization and their advancement seriously sped up. Carys remained my all-time favorite, Galen was frightening and curious, Alberic returned and became sort of a good-guy! And then there was Raffi. Raffi somehow matured so fast I didn't even notice until towards the end of this book. The only gripe here is that Felnia wasn't all as interesting as I thought she'd be. The Sekoi, however, makes up for this.

Plot (5/5): The plot was interesting, primarily because it took place in an already pre-established world. There were many curiosities throughout the novel which both struck me as intriguing and mysterious/

Prose (4/5): There are some nit-picky details here and there that shouldn't have belonged, but for the most part, the prose of the novel flowed quite well.

Pacing (4/5): Once again, I feel as if the novel was sort of rushed at last second, but aside from that, there was nothing major.

World (5/5): I wish I could rate this world higher, but maximum is maximum. The mysteries get larger, more intricate, and intense. I have a theory of the world, but I'll definitely wait till the next book to attempt to confirm it all.

Totals: 5+5+4+4+4= 22/5= 4.4 which rounds to 4.

Verdict: It's definitely a good read through. The plot is thick and the world is vast.

*A side note! On the hard cover editions of each of these books there is part of a map. If you combine each of the outer covers together you get the entire world! YAY FISHER FOR BEING EPIC!

Sometimes you get tired of reading about unlikely heroes tasked to save the world and other times you find the story to be engaging enough that you don't mind it repeating a well-trod theme. This is one of those other times. Galen is a harsh man and no one knows this better than his student, Raffi. Yet they are destined to be a part of the change. Along their journey they continue to cross paths with Carys, a member of the Watch (a group that brought an end to the relic masters' way of life), a thief-lord and a Sekoi, furred humanoid. These unlikely allies either help or hinder them and those lines frequently blur. Action ... magic ... fantasy ... comedic pacing can be found at various points. This YA book was as enjoyable as the first in this series and has me looking forward to reading the next one.
