This is the type of book you read for what happens in the middle as the ending is not necessarily worth it or climactic. To my understanding this is one of the early novels in English literature, which would explain the constant unnecessary repetition and detailing of EVERY little thing - At times it felt very frustrating to read as the continuous unnecessary details felt like obstacles and distractions rather than advancements of the plot. Aside from this, the story itself is a very interesting exploration of women's sexuality and survival in 18th Century England.

The first half dragged, but I enjoyed the second half once Moll became a con artist. I really feel like it would have been better if it had been edited down, because the pacing is all over the place and it's repetitive at times. But I also understand that this is one of (if not the first) novels in English, so I can forgive Defoe that. That being said, I don't feel like I can rate it that highly because it was suched a mixed reading experience. I would recommend listening to the audiobook.

This book could have done with a good editor to get rid of 1/3 of the material here. The book is very cyclical and repetitive, and while this does eventually lead the reader to gain a certain amount of sympathy for Moll and her bad predicament, it doesn't make it much less tedious. All of this could have been somewhat-redeemed if it had been followed up by a good conversion at the end. But I just couldn't find the conversion believable. Moll had always been a good person when she had the wealth to do so--and given that after her conversion she suddenly came into a streak of good fortune, I don't have any reason to believe that she wouldn't return to a life of crime if she needed to.
Given all of this, at the end of the day, this was a somewhat-tedious book that had a couple good points, but which ultimately failed in its goal as a conversion story, and thus, IMO, failed in its goal as a novel.
Rating: 1.5 Stars (Poor).
