A book that is falsely advertised on the cover--there is no real scandal, only uncertain repentance. A journey not worth taking.

Classic. Urban fiction. England + USA.
Story: This is the supposedly true story of a woman who was born in Newgate Prison from a criminal mother, was a wife many times, a thief many times, a felon, and more.
Characters: Though her real name is never given to us, Moll Flanders is the name given to her by others. She tells her life story in first person and it starts from her childhood all the way to old age. We meet family, guardians, husbands, lovers, friends, and victims all along her journey.
Language: Though written in the 1800's, the language is very understandable. For the most part, it reads as a crime novel written by the criminal herself. It's up to the reader to decide whether Moll Flanders made good decisions or judges her. Either way, it's a good read.
Entertaining and enjoyable.

Started entertaining, but became a slog. I've had it on pause for six months trying to bring myself to dnf it because it's a classic, but I ain't going back to it.
I really struggled with this book, particularly the language. I wanted to enjoy it, as the plot itself is all types of over the top dramatic, but the Ye Olde Time Language threw me. In saying that, I'm also trying to avoid reading books that I dislike, so after roughing it for half the book, I finally laid it aside. I'm sure I missed out on a lot of fun plot and events, but... well, no need to deal with unpleasantness, yeah?
I didn't really get the point of this book. The plot was like an insecure teenager who didn't know what to do with his life... it was all over the place and didn't really seem to fit any theme at all. Every now and then I'll get preached at by Defoe, but most of the things that happened served no purpose at all. I understand that this was a pre-novel and that people were still experimenting with ideas, but man, this was just bad.
4.5/5
This book was a real page-turner! Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe is an autobiographical novel written in the first-person perspective, where Moll recounts her life from her late teens to her early sixties: a life of crime, whoredom, love, pain and pleasure. I was tremendously satisfied and surprised with the ending. It turned out to be quite the resolution, were after a tumultuous life, Moll gets all that she has desired throughout her life: a family. This was my first Defoe and I will definitely read more of his works!
