First, before I read the front piece I thought this was a 1850/60 ish French work.  Fairly recent to the French Revolution, but it was published in 1921.  It reads as many of the French classic novelists, Zola, Huysmens, Flaubert read.  Therefore, even after reading the front piece the style was familiar.  As to the story, I enjoyed it.  There are some modern similarities but you will have to read it to find them.  And as a over view of the French Revolution is very accurate.  All in all well worth the time.

“He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad.” … “But I like my madness. There is a thrill in it unknown to such sanity as yours.”

Ok this was such a fun classic! Scaramouche is a romantic adventure set at the beginning of the French Revolution. I listened to the audible version & loved it! I loved hearing all of the French names although I can’t tell you any of the characters names 😂 Let’s just say I cataloged the characters by relationship for example… the uncle/godfather, niece/cousin, the dead friend, the villain, the actress & of course our main character Scaramouche who goes by multiple names throughout the book. It’s full of swashbuckling adventure, revenge, political intrigue, fencing, duels, a little romance & lots of twists & turns. We see how the French Revolution came about… things are never black & white and there are so many sides to every issue. This book has some Count of Monte Cristo vibes & you know I love that book. I love when a book surprises me & one of the twists at the end of the book shocked me 😳 So if you are looking for a fast paced fun classic… this is it!

André-Louis Moreau was raised by his godfather never knowing his parentage. The story begins with André-Louis working as a lawyer… he is unconcerned with the growing discontent among France's lower class-until his friend was mercilessly struck down by a member of the aristocracy. He eventually transforms into Scaramouche… Speaking out against the unjust French government, he takes refuge with a nomadic band of actors. “It’s a thought-provoking commentary on class, inequality, and the individual's role in society-a story that has become Rafael Sabatini's enduring legacy.”

“There is no worse hell than that provided by the regrets for wasted opportunities.”

Last night around nine o’clock I realized that I still had not finished reading this book. I finally reached the last page around midnight. Personally, I find the writing style of many classics to be tedious and, unlike The Scarlet Pimpernel, Scaramouche was no different. However, if you are a classic style enthusiast, you should have no problem. The story itself was excellent. It provides an interesting “other side of the story” when read alongside The Scarlet Pimpernel. Sir Percy and Andre-Louis actually have quite a few similarities. The ending of Scaramouche is hands down the best part. An foreshadowed possibility I had noticed ended up playing out, but not in the way I expected. In conclusion, I found this book to be a great title to add to your classic adventure reading list. Please note that there is some “thematic material” that is tastefully handled but not suitable for young readers.

One of the best opening lines I've ever read!

I'm sure this will end up being one of my favourite (re)reads of the year.

A fast paced read that seamlessly merges André-Louis story with real history and leaves you wanting to read more of both. The style is romantic, but the romance(s) are of the realistic sort.
Spoiler I love that André-Louis is shown having more than one love
and that he is a very flawed, self-aware hero.

His story and adventures were totally fascinating.

Since I remember loving [b:Captain Blood|158446|Captain Blood|Rafael Sabatini|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1347258939s/158446.jpg|2125579] even more, I am eager to get to a reread of that!
