The emotions of the writer, his anger and fear are very clear to the reader, and that makes it an uncomfortable book to read, as all books about racism should be. Very good points are made throughout the book but there are a couple of things that put me off.
It is always tricky for a privileged white person (cis woman in my case) to read a book about racism and constitutional racism and say they didn't like it. But I didn't like this book and I'll try to explain why.
First of all, I didn't like the writing style, I thought it was not that coherent, full of the same things again and again.
Another huge problem for me, was that the author justifies the beatings he endured by his parents because they were out of love. No, no beating is about love, its about power, about control. There is no excuse. None. If you have trauma, you seek help, you don't brutally beat your child.
