“The entire narrative of this country argues against the truth of who you are.”

This should be required reading. It’s a bit dense, and, despite being very short, takes some time to read and absorb. The stream of consciousness prose can be a little off putting to some, but if you take the time to move through this slowly it really adds to it. Heavy. Hard-hitting and deeply moving.

powerful, searing, visceral, unrelenting, and unbelievably eloquent, between the world and me succeeds in the almost-impossible task of encapsulating the personal experiences of being black in america to the country's insidious system of upholding whiteness w/ the destruction of its seeming counterpart. there's at least a sentence on almost every page that stuns or makes one pause out of its sheer revelatory power or truth. reading this book is very much like being slapped out of a big pharma drug-induced lifelong stupor.

This was very good and a great audiobook. It was beautifully written. I do like what is talked about but I feel like I’m a little stupid and stuff like went over my head/it took me a while to understand. But I would recommend this.

I loved the format of a letter to the author's son. This book brings  some peace and understanding to all the chaos and contradictions in the greater discussion about living black. Just read it, its so good.

This book was tough. I didn't necessarily learn something new, but Coates has a beautiful way of writing that really pulled me in. It broke my heart again and again, and yet it's a story of resilience. Should be required reading in my opinion!
