So usually with any story of survival of Pompeii because it seemed those who managed to escape before the one explosion that plunged the city into darkness and too dangerous to go in were lucky. But with that explosion, you were screwed basically. So good luck escaping. Anyway, for a children's book this was okay. Not my favorite of the others I've read/listened to, but still okay. Not the best.
I love historical fiction, especially children’s historical fiction. I don’t know why, but it’s underrated to most. In general, historical fiction gravitates to semi-recent wars or tragedies. That is why this I Survived book is so refreshing. It was a major time warp for the series. I think kids will love it! I remember being fascinated by Pompeii in school, but never really learned about it in-depth as an adult. The story followed its usual format, but I’ll set aside my feelings on that and say that it was one of the most compelling books in the series.

Another great read in the I Survived series. While I have my doubts about a Roman slave being learned in Science, it was still a terrific, exciting read. Now I want to learn more about Pompeii.
I read this book with one of my students and we both really enjoyed it. He is going into 5th grade and found this book fascinating. He even rented an educational movie on it and watched it over and over again because this book was so good!
I highly suggest this book, even to adults, because it is a fast, easy read and you learn about a time in history!
