I love food. I also love people who love food. Stanley Tucci whole heartedly loves food and it is such a delight to listen to him talk about it. Going to be honest - Taste is much better and I'd def read that if you were only going to read one, but I enjoyed the vignettes and glimpses of a year in his life and what he ate. What I actually most loved is hearing about who he cooked for. As someone who loves hosting and loves feeding people, it was nice to find a kindred spirit in Stanley Tucci. Though Harry Styles is not coming over on his bike to help me cook for my dinners. I definitely enjoyed hearing who he hosted and who his friends are, he clearly loves them and it threaded the needle on name droppyness. I had a very enjoyable time.

What I Ate In One Year is a book that mostly does what the title says.

Reading like a food diary of some sort, Stanley Tucci recounts a vast amount of meals eaten, as the title suggests, over the course of a year. From phenomenal meals both restaurant made and home cooked, from complex creations to simple pasta and cheese he covers it all - even the terrible.

What I loved about this, and his memoir (which is totally different), is how ordinary Stanley and his life seems. Sure he is a famous actor, but the way he writes this book puts the focus outside of this. He naturally recounts struggles with getting a show greenlit, of having to travel for work - because that’s a part of life and goes alongside some of the meals. But what he spends a good amount of time on is writing about his family life, the struggle of balancing working with preparing meals for the family (with help from his wife), trying to expand his kids palate, and even meals with friends - a lot of whom also happen to be celebrities…

Like Taste, this is not a book to read whilst hungry, and even if you’ve just eaten you will likely be hungry again soon. I enjoy Tucci’s writing style for its conversational tone, one which I can hear his voice while reading.

One day, I wish to share a home cooked meal at Stanley’s table. Not likely, but a man can dream.
