Wow just wow
I was hesitant going into this one, but it really is a masterpiece

3.5 stars

i should've known that something that was this popular would not live up to the hype, especially since tiktok and goodreads are not at all an accurate measure of how good a book is. in any case, it wasnt necessarily a bad read. in fact, it kept me wondering what would happen next in the journey that was Evelyn Hugo's life. it kept me wanting more, which is a good thing. but i guess i'm more used to the dramatics of YA and fantasy, because i was always left looking and hoping for more. i still enjoyed the story, as well as the lessons you could take away from the novel. it was heartfelt where it needed to be heartfelt. overall, definitely was interesting, just not my style.

I cannot believe I waited so long before diving into this book. Despite hearing what I thought were "spoilers" here and there on social media, this book still blew me away. There were so many moments where I just sat there, mouth opened, digesting what I'd just read. The complex and complicated relationships she had with each husband were unique and intriguing. Taylor Jenkins Reid... the woman that you are!!!! She has a way of writing with such glamor and mystique, I absolutely eat it up. This audiobook was fantastic, from the narrators to the pacing, and everything else.

Okay! I cried! Get over it!

Best parts of this book: the deep and real character of Evelyn Hugo, the dramatic and believable Celia St. James, the complicated queer love story, the random reminders that this is set in real moments (eg bringing up Reagan and the AIDS crisis), the late-book focus on mothers and daughters, and the constant discussion of various types of love without automatically considering romantic the most vital.

Eh parts: some plot elements and the character building of Monique as narrator

Overall, really really enjoyed
