Such a cute rewrite of the story. Focused more on Mulans inner battle and Shangs view of her. The description of Diyu was so interesting and well written

This book was a fun extension of the Mulan story! Specifically focusing on the various elements of the afterlife from Chinese mythology. It has the structure of following the various trials taken on by some mystical hero tasked with defying the gods. This structure is not usually my style which is the reason for the below-4 score. Like at some points I was just thinking, "aNOTHer roadblock?" But it definitely fits the story that the author wanted to tell.

This book truly gets you into Mulan's head and you understand why she is the hero because of how clever she is.

The reader, Emily Wu Zeller really sounds like Mulan at some parts which makes the book feel like a movie since the voice the author writes her in is so in character.

And honestly y'all, just read this instead of watching the live action remake. The female antagonist is actually done quite well here.

Aside from the original source material, Lim manages to use the “Mulan” mythos to create a surprisingly engrossing story with steeped in Chinese mythology while still capturing the central moral of the 1998 film.

The concept of this whole book series is cute but also very fascinating. It's like a "What If" series for Disney movies. I love that this book dove into Chinese culture and folklore by taking us through Diyu. It also showed a deeper relationship between Mulan and Shang that we obviously couldn't get in the movie. It was definitely a bit cheesy, but an easy read and very enjoyable!

Very fun.  It takes after the movie version, starting with the huns and the avalanche, then immediately deviates. It is not a retelling, but a what if expansion. Certainly a lot of fun and wonderful to watch Mulans journey.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the alternative spin it had on Mulan (one of my already favourite characters). I particularly loved that even though the journey was different, the ending remained how I had hoped.

Less “what if Mulan had to travel to the Underworld” and more “what if Shang, not Mulan, was injured by Shan Yu’s sword”, but a good read nonetheless.

I assume the cultural references were legit, since I lack the knowledge, and specifically enjoyed the dreamlike shifting truths and reality.

Plus, a sweet ending for *all*.

“Couldn’t a woman be worth something without having to be a bride?” So many Easter eggs quotes from the movie sprinkled in this slightly reshift / twist if you will about Mulan. This twist focuses on the part where they were in the mountains trying to defeat the Hun and the aftermath of said victory. This story did a great job of presenting itself in a way that I could actually picture the animation as I read. The pacing was a little slow so be mindful it takes a while before any action really happens. Although the book was a little wordy with the descriptions, everyone seemed to be the same as the movie versions of themselves. I’m excited to read the other novels in the Twisted Tales Disney series.
