Leverage in Death

J.D. Robb

4.13 AVERAGE

Eh. A low three stars.

I started this when it came out and just finished it today. It took me forever to get into this book.

It started out interesting and strong. But then it just sorta flatlines into serviceable. Usually if the police procedure/mystery aspect is strong I don't mind if we don't get any real interpersonal development. Or if the interpersonal stuff is great emotionally, then I don't mind if the case is weak.

This one had no real interpersonal stuff happening and the while the mystery/crime had some interesting elements, it just really collapsed on the motive. In the end I didn't really care about the victims. And the criminals were paper flat.

This felt very phoned in. So yeah, serviceable, readable but nothing memorable. Not the worst in the series by a longshot, but nowhere near the better installments either.

Maybe it's the new publisher that's bringing the newer books down, but I've noticed a decided quality shift since the change. This installment was no exception, being more of a 3.5 star read that I found was worth rounding up to 4 stars.

The plot was actually interesting this time, and somewhat kept me guessing! It was nice that Eve needed Roarke's actual expertise this time! I liked knowing what was going on with Nadine's books and movies, and actually seeing Eve's reactions to it all! However, it all felt a little glossed over. Parts of the case seemed to just jump ahead, and it didn't make sense to me as I was reading it.

All things considered, it was a good, entertaining book, but it could have used a bit more polish to be better.

Every time I read a new installment in this series, I’m more and more impressed with Nora Roberts (Robb) and how she comes up with new ideas. This book was no exception. It was another interesting set of murders and how Eve solved it all is always fun to read.

Another great addition to this series!

There were a couple of 'hmmm...' moments in this one. I love the series and the characters so it could just be my weird obsessions. It was a great book overall, as they always are. :)

4.5 Roarkey stars

ARC Received for an honest review

You would think that after over 20 years and nearly 50 books in a series, I would be growing tired of the In Death series, however it is the complete opposite.

Each and every time a new Dallas and Roarke (or as I have named him, Raawwrke lol) book is released I am like a kid a Christmas. And Leverage In Death is no exception.

Dallas is on the hunt for a killer who is certainly racking up a body count, and is chasing the why? None of it seems to make sense at first, but we know our girl is a bloodhound and will always catch her man.

Full of intriguing storylines, a whodunnit that I didn't catch on to until Ms Robb revealed it, I was hooked from the first chapter until the last.

I love that we got plenty of Dallas/Roarke time, however I always adore the side characters (who after all these years aren't really side characters at all, but family). I love seeing where there lives are at in each and every book.

Ms Robb keeps me on the edge of my seat (or, the edge of my couch as I laze around reading) each and every time, and I can't wait to see where Dallas and Roarke take us next.

I adore Eve, Roarke, “Somshit”, and all the rest. Peabody on caffeine is a hoot. :)

It begins with an inexplicable act where the marketing executive of a major airline walks into an important meeting with soon to be partners of another company to finalize their merger and detonates a bomb, killing twelve and injuring many others. Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Detective Delia Peabody soon learn that there was much more to this suicide bombing.

I really enjoyed this insidious case where it was dogged police procedurals to figure out the who and why. With the help of the team and Roarke (there was definitely a reason for him to help), Eve methodically assembles the clues and probable suspect pool to resolve the mystery. This is the type of story in the series that I love the most. It’s all about solving the case under serious time constraints as the killers aren’t done. And, there was an absolutely delicious secondary storyline that made this an even better read. I won’t spoil it for you but just know you’re going to love it.

While I enjoyed the story, it did drag in places where I felt there was a bit of repetition but only enough to keep it from being a 5-star read. Otherwise, this was another enjoyable installment in my most favorite series.

I never get tired of this series, this book was another pleasure to read.
I love the banter between Eve and Peabody. I do want to know why Eve can't catch that candy thief with future technology lol
Plenty of dramatic moments in this one, death and destruction, it was well plotted and I had no idea who or why. Thanks for all the Eve and Roark moments, always sigh worthy.
Great story and I highly recommend it.

Paul Rogan must make the worst choice ever. To save his beloved wife and daughter, he must kill others, people he works with and is friends with. He sees no way out of his dilemma, taking ten others with him into death.

Lieutenant Eve Dallas finds herself deep in a horrible crime that may have been committed as a way to manipulate stock prices. Luckily Roarke is available to guide her through the financial jungle while she is on the hunt for the people who terrorized the Rogan family.

Despite the horrendous intensity of the crime, there are moments of lightheartedness as well, such as Peabody and McNab being allowed to go to the Oscars with Nadine. I absolutely love the relationship between Dallas and Peabody!

More deaths occur, all for money. Robb has a deft way of making you care for the victims and survivors that you meet for such a short time. She's really on her game in this installment. Even the fight between Roarke and Eve over the line between cop and lover is logical, despite their deep love for one another. The weight of eighteen deaths hangs heavy on both of them, making tempers flare when an old acquaintance shows up in the mix.

Also discussed is how Nadine's Alcove book and later film has had an impact on Dallas' job, the recognition coming closer and closer to hampering her ability to find justice for the dead. Now there is another book in the works and the film makers want to do a trilogy. I expect to see more headaches for Eve as time goes on.

A great read, a return to the earlier books in quality and content. Should please all Eve Dallas fans. 5 out of 5.
