finished in a day! telling, capturing, and heartbreaking, this book covers the real mind f*ck of an abusive lesbian relationship. machado weaves together archival knowledge with personal account, providing a deep-cutting, thought-provoking narrative on queer abuse.

If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would. This memori was captivating, painful, and vulnerable. Multiple times while reading I found myself experiencing the emotions viscerally. This will be a memoir i think about for a very long time.

The book was Machado's experience of abuse in a lesbian relationship alternating with mini essays and tangents which I skipped. I was more interested in reading about her relationship.

I did not expect this to be as fast of a read as it was, but I was totally enthralled by this book.  Maybe that's because the chapters are so bite-sized, but a lot of it is Machado's insightful and lovely writing.

I'm always impressed by how someone can take their experiences and order them in a way that becomes a compelling narrative, understanding when information should be revealed, when to go backwards and forwards in time, and when to zoom out from a larger historical topic, and then zoom back in to a painful personal moment.  There was even a moment in this book where I gasped at what felt like a twist.!

Can't recommend this highly enough, and now I'm excited to check out her fiction work!
