I actually unexpectedly loved this. RuPaul is a moving writer and his dedication to transformation was very inspiring to me. Also, great at EDITING knowing what details were important and what wasn’t, all too often memoirs are filled with minute details that I do not care about! Good storytelling even just on audiobook. One of my favorites I’ve listened to in a while

If you’re looking for an exposé, this isn’t it. This book reinforces what I love about Ru: he is humble. What I liked about this book is Ru shares the parts of him his fans don’t know. Drag Race is not mentioned. Not even once (neither are other career highlights like his short lived talk show from the 90s).

HHM is not about Ru’s fame - it the story of Ru’s search for meaning. He pokes gentle fun at his young self and reflects on how being driven solely by ambition was, in the end, not the answer to happiness.

This book was short, funny, unexpected and left me appreciating RuPaul for not abusing celebrity. There is no air of self importance here, just a blunt look at how at the end of the day, loving your family and friends is the thing that gives life the most meaning.

Side note: oh how I wish I could have been at “Night of 1,000 Chers.”
