Quick and fun, though without much substance behind all that. The concept is certainly fascinating, and the character of Lucifer is thoughtfully rendered, which is enough to pull it away from some of the potential pitfalls of the concept in itself. Lucifer's cluttered prose, however, makes it difficult to keep your attention: as his attention wanders from an event, yours does as well.

This is the first book I’ve taken the time to write a review for. I was immediately captivated in the author’s style. It’s poetic and fun, yet approachable. The story had many interesting pivots from the original source materials. I could not put this book down. If you like stream of consciousness writing in books like The Catcher in the Rye and The Perks of Being a Wallflower, you will likely enjoy this book.

I, Lucifer is easily on my list of "almost favorites" - those books that I've read recently, and only once, so I'm not sure that it will be a favorite in ten year, but that I loved so much that I enjoyed every single word and now run around recommending it to everyone. The Devil gets a chance to get back into Heaven by inhabiting the body of a loser writer and behaving himself. Not only is the book incredibly hilarious (to the point where I would have to restrain myself from reading passages aloud to my boyfriend), but it also has a lot of great insights into the human condition, and how we fail to see the wonder around us and keep ourselves from fucking it up. I love this book.

Innovative concept, looking at the world through the eyes of a fallen angel. Lucifer returns to Earth and is hilarious and insightful.

La prosa más enrevesada que he leído, sí. Se va por la tangente cada 6,66 minutos, también. Pero eso es lo que me gusta. El protagonista es carismático, divertido e insufrible. La historia es el mejor fanfic de la biblia que he leído nunca. 5 estrellas.

Well, I got as far as p208, just after all the waffle about the two Germans, and decided enough was enough.

Nobody can say I didn't try. It was simply not an enjoyable novel.

I agree with what others have said about the short story and the padding. The story itself could have been told in a dozen pages if the padding were removed. That said, the padding is clearly included to give an insight into the character of Lucifer but to my mind it goes way over the top.

I may read the last couple of pages to see how it ends.

Marks out of 10?

Overall I'd give it 1.

Funny, heartwarming, well developed characters - not exactly adjectives commonly used to describe a book based on the big S - Satan. But here it is - Glen Duncan is extremely talented and witty in his writing and the ending was pleasantly jarring and serious compared to the rest of the text. The transformation into humanity is really quite charming.

This book will take you to the edge of your faith and push your head over the chasm, and over the needling wind that strikes and coats your face, you will hear him laughing. You know it’s fiction, and yet Glen Duncan writes with such convincing prose that you just fucking wonder. NB: do not read on a bad day, and his words and sentences will snake around your throat and choke the tears and rage out of you. This book will fuck you over.
