I found this novel utterly brilliant and thought provoking. Full of gorgeous figurative language, this book is layered with themes of war, betrayal, and human nature versus animal instinct. While the ending is maddeningly ambiguous, the reader accepts it because we instinctively sense that there are some things we can never know the answer to.
This is a book that stays with the reader long after the last page is read.

A sad book, but beautifully written, as is typical of Hartnett's writing. While certainly an intriguing read in many ways, I can't say I was overly impressed by The Midnight Zoo. While the storyline has the potential to leave readers thinking for hours after putting it down, like many of Hartnett's earlier novels do, it never succeeds in connecting the reader to the characters on an emotional level. The book reminded me vaguely of Pan's Labyrinth, but answered too many of the questions the film left open.
