This one is a roller coaster of a read from start to finish. Has you constantly questioning reality, the meaning of "morality", with so many reflections on the darker sides of what it is to live the human experience. Definitely not for the fait of heart!

I really enjoyed the characters & the plot twists, really the story itself. I do feel it was somewhat verbose, some of it could have been cut without hurting the amazing story hidden within.

This was a really immersive, enjoyable read!  It was long and required me to take it in small bites, which I enjoyed.  There are hard truths in this book, but the writing is wonderful and the characters are fully realized.  Definitely worth reading!  5 stars

This is a quiet, slow, character-driven mystery. The style of this book reminds me a lot of The God of the Woods. However, I connected with and rooted for these characters so much more! The character complexity is incredible, and I really enjoyed how all of the small details were revealed slowly over time. Whitaker’s attention to detail is impressive and something I really appreciate. Saint is probably the character that has stuck with me the most—the way she loves, works hard, and is always trying so hard to do the right thing.

I think this book looks at trauma in a very unique way. It explores what happens after a traumatic event and the ripple effect it creates, touching the lives of so many (all in different ways). I also enjoyed the commentary on what truly makes a life—the small moments, our decisions, experiences, and relationships. It really captures the human experience.

There were a couple things that didn’t work for me. First, I LOVE short chapters—they make feel successful and keep me turning the pages. However, these chapters felt TOO short. Sometimes I struggled to orient myself in what was happening, and by the time I’d figure it out, the chapter was over and we were jumping to a different character/location. Because of this, I found it especially hard to follow on audio, and I definitely preferred reading it in print. I also felt the pacing was a little off in the middle. The beginning and ending were fantastic, but the middle dragged for me.

While this might not be the best book I read all year, there were so many things I loved about it. This is a perfect book to get lost in while sitting by the fire during the fall and winter months!
