This was a good book. I think that dubbing it a mystery thriller is inaccurate. Sure there is a mystery and some thriller aspects, but it was more a look into trauma response. The trauma that Patch had resonated through everything he did for the rest of his life. The trauma affected Misty in an entirely different way. Saint was affected in a completely different way. It was a reflection of their lives and how the things that happened affected them over years.

4.5 stars round up. This book is beautiful on multiple levels - the vivid imagery, character development, depth of emotions… The impact of both trauma and love (and not just the romantic kind)…. The only reason I wouldn’t quite say 5 is that it was a bit drawn out so that by the time I reached one of the pivotal scenes it felt a bit unbelievable/anti-climactic - or like maybe it didn’t get the full space it deserved? Still processing this book so may change my opinion on that later. Definitely a great read with incredible writing.

I’m still processing, but ultimately I laughed, I cried, I felt things. I’m not sure how to do a review without spoiling but will do my best here- this is the first book I’ve read where I think the “thriller” part happens in the first 30%. After that is aftermath over many many years. It sometimes felt slow- but I don’t know that it was…complex, messy, full, hopeful. It kept me turning the pages and the ending was unexpected.

A masterpiece. It was easy to keep turning pages to find out what would happen next. And easy to get swept up on the saga of every character. I appreciated the focus on the long-term fallout that happens after trauma while not focusing on the person who caused the trauma.
