This is a beautifully written, masterfully painted novel about friendship and family, love and loss, that asks big questions and explores answers openly and freely. The characters are uniquely and vibrantly rendered, as is the sweeping setting. As the title implies, even the darkness is colorful in this book, which is ultimately about the depth and complexity in human beings and their choices. Nothing in this novel is merely "black and white".

Do I agree with everything Whitaker's characters believe or choose to do? No,of course not, and I think that's partly the point and what makes the substance of the novel most interesting.

This is a story about terrible, traumatic hardship and hard-won, soaring triumph, self-sacrifice and heroism, creativity, giving, and perseverance, all wrapped in page-turning, true-crime, suspense.

This one is a roller coaster of a read from start to finish. Has you constantly questioning reality, the meaning of "morality", with so many reflections on the darker sides of what it is to live the human experience. Definitely not for the fait of heart!
