This book is a literal GEM–you know, those novels with great plot, searing chemistry and heartbreaking romance, powerful characters, amazing storyline, but has low ratings and few reviews– I just can't believe My Beautiful Enemy isn't Sherry Thomas's best work because this is just as good to be adapted as a series or movie.
This is about two spies who fell in love and was seperated by their country, family, and opposing duty. Only to be reunited in the point of life where everything has changed. A tale of love, lost and sacrifice–and Good God! I'm such a sucker for these.
"The Cowherd and the Weaver Girl are lovers who cannot be together, so they spend their lives on opposite banks of the Silver River, which is what the Chinese call the Milky Way."
“But on the seventh day of the seventh moon of the year, a flock of magpies form a bridge across the river, and they are briefly reunited, before they must each return to their own bank for the long wait to begin again.”
“It is up to the beholder to decide whether the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl are about to reunite, or about to part again,” said Catherine...
“What is your verdict, Captain? Joyous reunion or more heartrending separation?”

WHY must Sherry Thomas torture her characters with YEARS of longing?? My GOODNESS.
I read the first chapter and was a little confused. This felt like something that might be in a Lady Sherlock book, but not a romance. Dark, stormy boat battles to the death?!? In a romance??? It took me a few more weeks to pick it back up after that first chapter, but once I did, I hardly wanted to set it back down. The longing, the heartbreak, the KNOWING they belong together. Oof. My heart.
Also...what's with Sherry Thomas and cheating on the person you are technically still WITH?! It's in every one of her stories I've read so far! She even called it out as bad form in this one!!!

It is entirely possible that I like this book as well as I did because I read it right after Rose Under Fire I needed something sweet and simple. A palate-cleanser, if you will. I read this while traveling from Indiana to the East Coast, in one wolfing sitting, and it was just perfect. However, I've tried to read the prequel (in different conditions) and it's just not working for me.
This was such a fun read! A romance novel with world travel and martial arts! So unusual and so enjoyable!

I enjoyed the less-straightforward structure of the story, that the romance was hot, but not too explicit, and the cinematic action scenes. However, for me, the real emotional high point was the relationship between the heroine and her step-father.
