"Looked at this way, his worst enemy as an investigator was time."

I've been meaning to try one of his books ever since I read and loved the first book of the Alexander Blix and Emma Ramm series he wrote together with Thomas Enger... Dregs is actually the sixth William Wisting book, but somehow the first five books have never been translated into English (I really don't understand why publishers do that to be honest). Anyhow, I did feel that something was missing by not having read the previous books, and I struggled to warm up to the main character as a consequence. I just never felt a real connection with William Wisting, and it was harder to fully invest myself in the story. I was a bit underwhelmed by the developments and explanation of what is is happening in his private life as well; this might just have been because of the fact that the previous character development and therefore possible sympathy towards the main character was missing... But since I don't understand Norwegian and can't read the first five books, I guess I will never know. I also thought the pace was quite slow and the story dragged in points; something I was very surprised by as the series he writes with Thomas Enger is extremely engaging. I kept putting Dregs down to do other things instead, and that is never a good sign... The final twists were quite interesting, but I felt like the story took too long to get there. I will probably still read the next book to see if things improve though.

This book's ending is a bit abrupt. I think I would have enjoyed it more if not for the ridiculous"illness" of the main character. Really... whose doctor calls them with that diagnosis?

I couldn’t help but compare to Arnaldur Indridason.

I enjoyed the story but I didn’t get the same flush of emotions as I did with Jar City.

I will continue with Jorn Leir Horst as I didn’t dislike the novel - and it was good as a break between denser novels.

adventurous dark mysterious reflective tense medium-paced

Okay, this is not a bad story but it took me forever to finish it because it never really caught my interest. The reviews said that this is medium-paced but that isn't how it felt to me. To me, the plot dragged endlessly and I just kept losing interest and going for a different book.

Part of it was that I didn't particularly like any of the characters, which is always important to my enjoyment of the story. But also... the constant remark about how wonderful are the cops. Look, I'll see what they do and I'll form my own opinions, okay? Because, seriously, that didn't go so well for you, right, Ms Wisting?

And maybe all of this is because this is actually the sixth book in the series, but only the first being translated into English. I'll never understand this kind of editorial's decisions :/

I don't know, I might read the next book in this series but I'm not sure. Maybe it would be better to wait until the whole thing is translated and read them in the order they were intended to have.

A short while ago I read caveman in this series unaware that it was book 9 in the series and having seen that the latest in the series had won a crime writers award I was keen to revisit the books from the beginning however book 1 ,apparently the first translated ,is book 6 by the author so for someone who likes to know the genesis of a character this is a little frustrating however it did not decry from what is ultimately a well crafted novel with absorbing characters.
here Inspector Wisting , wonderfully grumpy, investigate the discovery of a number of left feet. It takes him into the realm of historic crimes which cross over with his daughter's ( a journalist) writing a piece about the effect of prison on a criminal who had 20 years previously killed a policeman.
Great plotting and a satisfying end , I will definitely be reading more.

Promising series.
