I LOVED this book. I cried. This was one of the first books I recommended to everyone I knew. Dolores was my friend.

I love this book because of how it broke my heart and brought it all back together again. I love having a protagonist that you are both rooting for but hate sometimes but is ultimately so complex, she doesn't fit in any one trope. I devoured it in two days and then thought about it for months after. One interesting observation after reading the entire book is that Lamb never gives you a full description of what Dolores looks like or her mother whom she is reported to look like. Even though many of her life experiences revolve around her appearance, it is always up to your imagination. Finally, even though Lamb has Dolores describe her weight at different points throughout the book, because we never get a detailed description of what she looks like, so much of our perception of Dolores is through her perspective. She can be quite self-hating which I feel like exaggerate her actual appearance, but again it's all about her psychological state rather than spoon feeding the reader exactly what she looks like. Whether you like it or not, you are along for the ride in Dolores' mind.

Dnf at 50%... damn this book is upsetting. The writing was excellent and I read it compulsively until it freaked me out too much and I had to put it down. My girl Dolores really can't catch a break, huh.

So conflicted on my feelings with this one. I really like stories that follow a large portion of someone’s life…so this was really nice for that. Lots of character development. But! It’s kinda problematic at times…I’m not upset at reading hardships and abuse but a man wrote this and tried to depict the experience of a fat girl….
