The story is similar to that of Pinocchio except the cautionary aspects are regret of Zebulons. Zebulon is a morally dubious and duplicitous character. His narration is invigorating yet krass and cruel at the same time. The sex scenes and descriptions are quite alot. I was surprised considering the cover art; and the fact it follows a undead 17 year old. I was expecting more YA not adult themes. Or descriptions. Are just too carnal and visceral for my taste.
Towards the end Zeubulon has sex as a corpse with a. Sex craved Hollywood actress and in the act his penis breaks off his body. Did not need the description

The positive down of the side characters like Burch Churchwell “Church” bring out the best of Zebulon. I will give vol.2 a try may change my opinion on this one

By far one of my favorite books of all time!!! I love the story, Zebulon's personality and the style of Kraus. It's so detailed and the fact that you can actually feel that you know Zebulon and that he is real is amazing.

Far It's weird to think of this tome--600+ pages and only half the story--as a "minor work" by Kraus, but it kind of is--it's not as splashy or showy as some of his other books, a quieter, more subdued sort of story. The pace is slow, but Zebulon Finch is an engaging character--he's deeply flawed, and knows it, and spends his death trying to atone for the terrible things he's done and continues to do to people.
It does run into a bit of the Forrest Gump problem, in which the character is involved in every major historical event--not to the same absurd extent, and I don't know how you could have a story set from the 1880s to 1940s and not touch on WWI or the jazz age/Prohibition or early Hollywood, but it does seem like a pretty crowded story at times.
Will totally pick up the second volume and keep going.

I need the next book like air. So engaging and witty, Zebulon is a terrific companion and I can't wait to accompany him on his next adventure.

There's one scenario in particular that i could have done without reading and that seemed to be thrown in for some sort of shock or ew factor but overall I really enjoyed this book and look forward to volume 2!

This was a book I did not finish. I had a really hard time connecting to the main character and understanding his choices. Usually when this happens there's a side character I enjoy and will finish reading the book for, but this did not happen for me. Maybe I will give it another go in a few years, but currently I did not enjoy it and am not interested in trying to read it again.

Overall, the story is interesting and has a lot to offer. However, I feel the pacing was extremely slow and lacked enough buildup to keep me interested long-term.
