I don’t usually read thrillers and I had trouble actually taking the book seriously. Movie thrillers usually get me good but this book was slow to warm up for me. But I really enjoyed the pace of the second half of the book. Despite how chilling it was I couldn’t put it down. I also learned a lot of new words reading this.

An interesting character study. I didn't like any of the characters. But their actions and thoughts were interesting to see.

Defos living lives that I cannot relate with.

idk, obvs the point of the book is the people and not what is happening to them, and their personalities are fleshed out and believable. I'd rather have read about what happened than these particular unlikeable character tho.

3.5 stars, rounded up. I think the prose can be a bit much, but i found it fitting in the latter half of the book, where everything is slowly starting to unravel. yoga penis line is eternal, though

The writing didn't work for me. I felt like we were getting hit over the head with some things while it seemed that Alam was trying to put too many ideas into one book so nothing got the time that it needed to breathe.

Could not connect with this book on any level. This premise is actually quite good and fortunately time coming out right amidst a pandemic but unfortunately, the author really has nothing interesting to say. Maybe it's a sign that an X'er upper-middle-class intelligentsia couple has no connection to my world experience because I found these characters vapid and uninteresting but the author is also unwilling to dig too critically into that boringness and vapidity. This book is skippable for sure.
