Like. A whole lotta nothing happens. Not really creepy or horrific. If I look at reviews and see fives I might be mad and confused. I'll admit it, I don't get this book at all. It's incredibly horny to the point of hysterical laughing. Um if I wanted to read legal minors jerking off I'd fire up a oh three dot org. Just kidding I'm normal so I would not seek out child porn written by thirty yo fandom freaks.
The writing and themes were interesting, I just don't think the pay off was worthwhile.
My reading time .82 hours. Meh.

๐ฆฉ๐ฆฉ๐ฆฉ๐ฆฉ(four stars as rated in flamingos because.... um... flamingos?)
Something is happening. Something is happening. It was supposed to be relaxing a weekend away for Clay, Amanda and their two teenage children; a few days to unwind. And then, well, something happened. This other couple arrived. The power went out in the city. And that noise... What even was that? Are they safe where they are? Should they leave? Or should they wait until they know what's going on? What do you do when you have no idea what to do? You leave the world behind you.
โThey had asked themselves questions when they decided to have children โ do we have the money, do we have the space, do we have what it takes โ but they didnโt ask what the world would be when their children grew.โ
If you are into the kind of film where you don't see the monster until 2/3 of the way through, then have I got the book for you! Leave The World Behind is, in my opinion, the definition of a psychological thriller. What is most unsettling about this story isn't what it shows you but what it doesn't. There is very little action, but don't take that to mean that the book does not move. I genuinely could not put it down. The prose, the characters, the narration... it was all expertly done, in my opinion. I would highly recommend listening to this book. Rumaan Alam's words in Marin Ireland's voice was as beautiful as it was unsettling. This is the kind of story you keep thinking about for days afterward.

Amanda and Clay leave New York City, and head to a remote house for a vacation in Long Island. They're both enjoying spending time with their kids and letting life slow down for a while, but the spell is quickly broken by a late night knock at the door. It's the owners of the property. They are frantic, saying a sudden power outage has swept across the city. Can these people be trusted?
This book is ๐ฅ.
I have never been so stressed by a book, but so unable to put it down. Leave The World Behind is the epitome of watching a car crash happen. It's claustrophobic and aggravating, you feel as in the dark and stuck as all of the characters.
The writing can be quite jarring at first, for the first 30 pages I struggled. I was wondering what the hell I'd let myself in for, but I stuck with it, and soon got into the swing of things. I've never read anything like it before, Rumaan Alam writes in a way that gives the reader a chance to hear everyone's thoughts. It adds a whole other layer to the narrative. The author effortlessly uses this technique to create such an accurate examination of race and class, amidst all of the other chaos going on.
Technology dependence is a big big theme, with the TV and Internet going down almost immediately. It just made me think how absolutely screwed we would all be. The thought of trying to get somewhere, when you don't know the area, without Google maps, just made me feel sick๐
Leave The World Behind is much more than a suspense filled end of the world novel, it goes so much deeper than that, and it feels especially apt to have come out in 2020. I know this one is quite polarising, but I urge you to give it a go, just know that the ending is pretty open. I truly haven't stopped thinking about this book since I finished it over two weeks ago, it's a book that claws into your brain and never leaves.
