An semi-autobiographical coming-of-age story about a young lesbian growing up in a highly religious community in the North of England. The narration was so endearing with its childlike innocence, and the exploration of religious trauma and questioning one’s beliefs after growing up in the church was really well done.

I absolutely adore this text. As a queer church kid it's all too relatable (although not to Jeanette's extreme!) I read it in one day as it moves quickly, and some of the quotes are truly exceptional! I also enjoyed the references to Arthurian Legend, specifically Sir Percival.

A semi-autobiographical fictional novel on the early life of author and lesbian ex-evangelical, Jeannette Winterson. This book is ripe with heavy religious themes and biblical references that are difficult to grasp without prior knowledge or research. I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much if I’d have had to analyse it; the lack of pressure to understand every concept and metaphor was crucial to my enjoyment of the story. Overall, this was a lovely book but I’d only recommend it to those interested in the religious themes.

Too rich for my blood. This book was too hard for me to read, as the first couple chapters focus on the main character’s religious upbringing in a triggering way. I want to come back to it someday, but I just can’t read it right now.
