Not quite what I thought I was getting, but still pretty decent.

Enjoyable action romp with enough mystery to take the reader along, though I found the promise of the premise more enticing than the payoff. The ending made the story seem too derivative, though I suppose that that might have been intentional given the obvious theme of history repeating itself/being stuck in samsara. It's a little bit Highlander crossed with a spy story done in intentionally hipster/Bratz doll styling (mostly in a good way).

I personally found the art/layouts/lettering to be a little busy, though I thought that it fit the fast pace of the story. The two-page layouts were sometimes not clearly enough two-page layouts, and I found myself reading the left page, then the right page a few times before realizing that I was supposed to have read all the way across.

I'm not 100% sure what to say about Welcome Back. I'm left with more questions than answers, but I'm moderately sure that was the intention.
The idea of a nevereding war outside of time is a wonderful premise, but the refusal to give us any idea what each side stood for and why they were fighting made me really frustrated. I had a hard time connecting and sympathizing with the characters when I wasn't sure what their motivations were.
The world building was decent and it was nice to see that the death didn't go unpunished like it tends to in most modern stories.
I really liked the art in the first half of the volume and was quite disoriented by the sudden change. I found Mali to be almost unrecognizable after the switch and had to rely on her green commentary boxes to recognize her. I understand that artist changes happen, and have at times enjoyed seeing a variation on a characters design but I don't think it was pulled off well here.

I read a review this week stating that this was one of the strongest first issues of a comic serial they had read in years. I can definitely see that. Sebela packs so much backstory and world-building into one issue that it's hard to believe this is only setting up for a mini-series.

I was given a copy of this graphic novel by the publisher on Netgalley but all feelings and opinions are my own.

I found this graphic novel while searching Netgalley and what appealed to me was the lesbians, I'm not going to lie. I always look for good queer literature and I also love graphic novels so I was really ready for this. But it took so long to get to the lesbians, I wasn't sure it was going to happen or at least not in this volume. The plot set up takes up most of the volume, and while that wouldn't be bad, I thought it got to be a bit tedious. I got the gist of the plot when it was first explained and I didn't need to keep having it explained again and again. Maybe Sebela thought he really had to reinforce that they were made to kill each other for the ending to be shocking but I found it took away from my enjoyment of the story and I was already expecting the ending so it made it even more tedious.

All of that being said, I found this graphic novel enjoyable and I would read future volumes, although I'm not going to run out to go get them.

That twist though! I did struggle with the internal dialogue of the first volume because it wasn’t always clear to me who was speaking. And the artwork / illustration changes later in the volume. I really like the illustrations that we started with.
