It is the first time I've ever read a book from Hungarian literature and It was a pleasing read for me. Generational differences, dealing with loss and trying to adapt into a new life were presented in such soul-touching way from different perspectives.
The tone felt sincere and I appreciated the authencity of all characters but eventually, Ettie gets the crown. Her alienation to her surroundings after moving in with her daughter in Budapest, her efforts to make herself useful and functional but her being denied no matter how hard she tried... Her trying to connect with her past and not being able to make a peace with the fact that things do change. Iza's lack of emotional expression, her being so uptight as for her own feelings. It broke my heart to read how much Iza loved her parents and did everything in power to give them comfort but her emotional disenchantment somehow prevented her from relating to them and fully bonding with them. My heart had been shattered into a thousand pieces by the time i finished reading the book. I strongly recommend this if you are in for a very real, relatable and heartbreaking family story.

شاکله داستان در فاصله دو مرگ روایت می‌شود و تصویرگر دنیای متفاوت مادر و دختری است که علی رغم تمام تلاششان در کمک به یکدیگر، ناخواسته موجب رنجش هم می‌شوند. نویسنده با یک روایت ساده، نسبتاً گیرا و مملو از عاطفه و احساس به مخاطبش نشان می‌دهد که چه فاصله عمیقی در عین نزدیکی میان انسان‌هاست و انسان‌ها بسته به شرایط روحی و سنی چگونه بار زندگی گذشته را بر دوش می‌کشند، هریک از آن‌ها چه طیف برداشت متفاوتی از موضوعات زندگی دارند و این برداشت‌های مختلف گاه چگونه ناعامدانه زمینه‌ساز آسیب‌ها و زخم‌هایی است که هر کدام به عنوان عشق و محبت به دوستان و خانواده وارد می‌کنند. در چند خط پایان کتاب ماگدا سابو نشان داد چگونه قدرت قلم یک نویسنده می‌تواند لرزه بر اندام و اشک بر دیدگان مخاطبش جاری سازد و روحش را از تیرگی و سیاهی‌ها بزداید.
دو بخش از کتاب را در اینجا میارم که اولی به دلیل برگزیدن عنوان کتاب اشاره داره و دومی بخشی از آهنگ قدیمی است که شعرش را یوژف بایزا سروده و در صفحات پایانی کتاب آورده شده:
یک - ایزا هم وقتی بچه بود از داستان‌های غم انگیز فراری بود، یک ترانه بود، ترانه‌ای زیبا از دوران دانش آموزی خودش که هرگز نشد برای ایزا بخواندش، چون بلافاصله میزد زیر گریه و عجز و لابه می‌کرد که شخصیت مرده ترانه دوباره زنده شود، هیچ وقت تا آخر به ترانه گوش نکرد...
دو -آن بالا در اتاقی از اتاق‌های قصر، مشعل‌هایی می‌سوزند و می‌درخشند و این پایین در خانه‌ای آوای مرثیه‌ای می‌پیچد و طنین انداز می‌شود، درست در میان اتاق آرمیده بر بلندای تابوتی باکره عروسی دلربا، بی‌جان خفته و نمی‌شنود، گونه‌هایش رنگ پریده همچون تپه‌هایی پوشیده در کفنی سپید، چشمان زیبایش فروپوشیده چون ستارگانی در پس ابر... آه ای کاش که من در این تابوت خفته بودم، نه تو ای گل زیبای من دوشیزه بلورفام در بستر من.
و در پایان عبارتی که در نکوداشت این اثر ماگدا سابو در یکی از نقدهای ادبی نوشته شده :

Pačioje pradžioje atrodžiusi kaip dar viena knyga apie tėvų ir vaikų nesusikalbėjimą į pabaigą istorija pavirto stiprią emociją paliekančia idėja apie tai, kaip mes patys nesuprantame savo trūkumų.

Por un lado el estilo es muy plano, demasiado sencillo y el uso de la tercera persona le da una frialdad añadida que no encaja con una historia que trata sobre todo de sentimientos y de pensamientos más que de diálogos. Sientes el “dijo menganito" “respondio fulanito" todo el rato presente y además te describe cada pequeña acción de los personajes, como echar la cabeza atrás en un contexto de por sí lúgubre. No he conseguido conectar con ningún personaje y siento que la historia no ha trazado ningún camino en concreto.

“Iza’s Ballad” is one of the most moving books I’ve read in quite a while. Szabó is a master psychologist and paints the inside worlds of her characters with such care and empathy. Although “The Door” is deservingly praised, this novel is a greater triumph.
