Much like Bella Baxter I scoured my thesaurus in search of synonyms to describe this book. I’ve settled, at least for now, on rambunctious as my crown jewel of description. Through her sound reason and logic as well as her unabashedly beautiful views of humanity Bella Baxter becomes (by far) the most lovable character in this novel. Through the competing narratives of the story the reader has to perform their own surgery on the book and dissect the fantastical from the important, significant, necessary, and dare I say fun, lesson sewn into this book. I found myself googling the characters as if they would appear on my screen with a linked Wikipedia page. Gray has earned my trust through this book and his world building does not fall short. My favorite part of the book has to be Bella’s early letters written in perfect Shakespearean iambic pentameter— because why not. I’m so delighted that I chose to read the book before seeing the movie and if the movie can preserve at least a quarter of what this book offers then there is still time for Yorgos Lanthimos to earn the credit of directing my favorite movie of 2023.
