Povere Creature!

Alasdair Gray

This was not only a SLOG, but it felt like chapter after chapter of a man trying to imagine what it'd be like if women were actually autonomous creatures with perspectives of their own. He had to frankenstein a woman to make this happen btw, clearly those women don't already exist.

firstly, I’m now OBSESSED with epistolary novels, with diagrams and letters and “news clippings”… and I loved how meta it was with including the author as a character in these footnotes and addendums. personally, I think it really helped with the worldbuilding as it’s a mix of historical fiction and sci-fi. such an interesting book format!!!

secondly, I LOVE an unreliable narrator so you can imagine my surprise when I got to the last 50 pages and the narrative completely flips on its head. I found it a very apt commentary on the role of gender and sexuality in storytelling. this is definitely a book I’d like to reread to see what references, loopholes, and characteristics I missed the first time

This was incredibly fun but also poignant at the same time. Such a clever way to explore the theme

someone on the cover described this book as a booby trapped frankenstein and I completely agree. good, fascinating and disgusting book told through many characters perspectives ranging from hilarious to sick.
I read this because I really enjoyed the movie - I would say the movie is more worth your time overall, but this was still worth reading and I loved the diagrams and illustrations. weird ass shit!

I genuinely have NEVER read a book like that... I have no clue what happened. How interesting! How graphic!
