"She also said the wicked people needed love as much as good people and were much better at it"
Look. Maybe I just didn’t get it. But I just couldn’t care less about these characters from the start to finish of the book. And didn’t know what was even happening half the time.

Had this not tired me immensely at times, it would be a 5 star book for me.
First of all, I had never expected such a beautifully, sarcastically and brilliantly feminist book to come from the brain of a man yet here we are.
I became interested in reading this book because of the film adaptation which I loved immensely. However, I can say that the book surpassed the movie for me. They vibes were similar but the writing style and extra plot points ommited in the film made it pack way more of a punch. Also, there were so many points where the messages were clearer and while reading I was astonished that in a simple sentence alasdair managed to include so much compact wisdom. He gives so much food for thought in a very fun way. It's been a very long time since a book made me consider so many different things in such an inquisitive way.
However, at some points, especially on the historical notes at the end which are still part of the fictional story I got tired. The mix of fictional events and facts was very intricate and tired me a lot. I think an epilogue with just the parts regarding Victoria's views and end would have sufficed and been much easier to read. Yet if it's this brilliant writer's decision to make the book difficult in that way I respect that.
Lastly, I loved how there was a comic element to the story, a magical realism of a short. Also, how the narration was layered and in the end you get to decide about what you believe is the right version of events.
Overall, it is a demanding book to read with many historical and cultural references. Nonetheless, all the while it manages to be witty, entertaining and philosophical. Definitely worth reading especially if you loved the movie.
(I underlined a lot and will make notes on it soon so if anything comes up I will update)

This books has layers and layers and discussing its themes will take me hours (of very pleasant discussion indeed!), so I’ll keep my review short.
This book’s prose flew pleasantly, it’s setting kept me intrigued and topics of the way society treats women, the poor and social action were presented in a such a format to encourage discussion.
I highly recommend it.
