“Only bad religions depend on mysteries…truth, beauty, and goodness are not mysterious. They are the commonest, most obvious, most essential facts of life.”

Unreliable narrators allow the reader to come to their own conclusions. Explores women’s choice & social class
cards on the table i hated the lanthimos film when i watched it. thankfully i enjoyed the book much more - i think what lanthimos chose to adapt from the original text wasn't really what made this as interesting as it is, and i think the book benefits from not being laden with the unspoken perspective of the film on bella's development.
the film aside, gray's prose is great fun. the absurd characters, layered meanings exploring empire, scotland, gender, etc. and competing accounts of the events of the book are all wonderfully executed. victoria's reassertion of her own narrative after the successive attempts by blessington, baxter, wedderburn and mccandless to deny her autonomy and any claim to herself elevates it all even further

I don’t think the audiobook was a good option - I kept getting lost and was generally just very confused about what was happening.
The parts describing how Bella came to be just gave me the ick.

An intriguing Frankenstein spin-off about a woman whose unconventional origins sets her outside Victorian social conventions, forcing everyone around her to reconsider their ideas about love, family, politics, and more. I like how the framing of this book forces you to think about gender and the reliability of narrators (especially in historical texts).
i would say 3 1/2 instead of 4 but this isnt letterboxd and it doesnt let me do that. obvi read this after watching the movie partly because i loved the movie and partly because im writing a paper on it and wanted some extra stuff to make analysis easier. it did not do that. if anything it makes analysis harder (which i still have to do but im writing this instead of writing a whole paper and then filming and editing a video essay). anyway i enjoyed it up until the end which tbh i mainly skimmed because again, i have a paper to write. i dont have an issue with unreliable narrators (like i loved wedders section in the middle of the story that was funny) but i do hate change and being told at the end of the story that everything was wrong and a lie kind of ruined the fun lol. but i still liked this! its the first full book ive read in a while so good for her for getting me to do that. time to do my homework
