For The Broken

Solid meh from me. I bought the kindle version and the format was all messed up (I'm just assuming here because it was just all jumbled together with no page breaks).

Just kind of reminded me of a list of Instagram captions, imho. Some were good, but most were pretty cliche.

“For the oppressed” has some truly lovely pieces! Empowered woman empowering women. Love it!

Vulnerable and Emotional but Flawed

I read this in an extremely short period of time which is common with free verse poetry books. I read the ebook though and the formatting left a lot to be desired. This would’ve probably been more enjoyable in a physical book, because I definitely didn’t get the proper flow of the poetry with how little formatting was done. I think this author has a lot of potential and I look forward to reading future work, but this one is definitely just a quick digestible somewhat surface level poetry read.

So not for me. It felt like reading 100 inspirational tweets with no spell check.

Terrible.

This is just a bunch of words mashed up together trying to sound poetic. It feels like a 5 year old wrote this.

Unoriginal and complete garbage. Was there a point to this? It’s not a poetry book at all, more like a random compilation of quotes and words strewn together. Anyone could have written this. And while it discusses racism, I get the sense that the writer is the one who’s racist. A Rupi Kaur and Nikita Gill wannabe. Yikes.

Quotes I liked:

you looked right past my inadequacies
no, even better you loved them better
than anyone
has ever loved the best parts of me

---

it's hard to heal when
your mind has moved on but your heart is stuck
in the past

Do not get lost in how broken you feel. Find your strength in places you never expected.

oh goodness, this was beautiful.

There were some really good, gut-punch lines in this for me, but the style was so choppy it was hard to read. Single words as entire lines should be for emphasis, and used sparsely, not a commonplace style choice.

Poetry isn't just
writing Profound SentencesTM
like
this
and calling
it
a
day.

That's what this book is and half of the stuff is taken from a list of most popular tweets by milquetoast people on Twitter. Good thing it's so short, at least I only lost 20 minutes of my life I'll never get back.

take solace in those who have stood by you through it all
loyalty is of infinite value and so rare these days
remember who was there when you were broken
and do not forget them in their own times of trial

you looked right past my inadequacies
no, even better
you loved them better than anyone has ever loved the best parts of me

I really loved some parts of this, other parts were just okay
