Goddamn that was rough

I will not I hate Covid discussions in books and this one was HEAVY on the Covid discussions. Personally, I don’t like discussions that ground me in a certain timeframe. But the author explained why she chose to do this and I understand it is her preference.

This Karin Slaughter book was not quite as strong as The Good Daughter, but I still enjoyed it. Also, I don't know if I just happened to read two books that were similar but now I'm starting to think that all of her books are about two estranged sisters who suffered a tragedy as teenagers and also live in Georgia. I'll be reading Pretty Girls soon, so we'll see.

As I said, this book follows two sisters, Leigh and Callie, mostly in the present day (COVID included) but with brief flashbacks to a horrific event that occurred when they were teenagers. This "event" has come back to bite them about 25 years later and now they have to deal with the consequences. This is another book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. However, I did feel more connected to the characters in The Good Daughter than in this novel.

This was a rough read in terms of difficult issues, but I enjoyed the dynamic between the main characters, the straightforward but engaging plot, and the writing. I also appreciated the empathetic and nuanced portrayal of one of the main character's addiciton issues.

Overall I absolutely loved this book, and everytime I put it down I couldn't wait to pick it back up. 

The only thing I didn't like was how much reference there was to COVID (and NOT because I'm a conspiracy theorist like Phil). I just didn't feel like those details (i.e. referencing masks being up or down, etc) really added anything and it almost got distracting -- we've all lived with it for 3 years so I would have enjoyed getting lost in a story world where it doesn't exist, y'know? 

All in all, incredible read as usual from Slaughter!!!

This was my first Karin slaughter book and it was good, but sooooo so dark. Her writing was undeniably incredible but the content was too graphic and dark for me. It’s making me think twice before reading more of her books
