marked down because the Edwardian language was hard to read sometimes but it felt like too important a book to take much off

I was sitting on a draft of this review for about two weeks because I'm not done thinking about Maurice. I'll probably not gonna be done for another few, so have this:
Forster was able to imagine a happy ending for himself in 1913 and dedicated his book to "a happier year", and I know everything on this world sucks right now, and besides war and climate emergency and all that there is whole countries suddenly prosecuting queerness again or chipping away from queer healthcare or teenage trans girls beaten half to death in Germany and nothing happening expect some TERFy twitter hashtags - but I have to believe that things will get better. Doesn't look that way atm but if stop believing in that, I'm doomed.
This book was sad and kind of dishartening in a way, but it also gave me hope.
Anyway.

The character growth is off the charts, and the ending with a touch of magical realism is charming beyond words
