I enjoyed the movie much more than the short story. The movie had charm that I didn't get reading the story.

So here's the story of how I came to reread this book tonight. Our local used bookstore is closing next month, and they have stacks of boxes of books in the back that aren't suitable for resale and are destined for recycling. Because I wanted to get some old magazines for art project purposes, they let me loose in the back room. And oh, the treasures I found! One of which was a battered but intact copy of this book, in the exact edition that I owned when I was wee. So of course it came home with me (despite the fact that I actually own a newer and much less battered copy).
It is impossible for me to separate the merits of this book, reading it as an adult, from how much I adored it when I was a child. But even when I was very young I recognised the moral greyness of it, which is something I can appreciate about it now. Maybe it's not actually perfect, but it is beloved.
