Broken by Don Winslow is the tasting menu of everything I like about the crime writer. From corrupted cops and honorable thieves to a border guard who’s out to do the right thing — even if it’s going to get him into trouble — it’s all on full display here in this short, punchy collection of stories.
The last time I read a book by Winslow, he was tackling the drug war between the US and the Mexican cartels. We’re talking about a lot of drugs, a lot of violence, a lot corruption and a lot of corpses on the highway — and you do get some of those here. You don’t walk away from writing a trilogy like that without everything else filtered through some form of blood and violence. What I find interesting, though, is that Winslow somehow still found moments of lightness and grace. San Diego Zoo, for example, begins with a monkey on the loose with a revolver in its hands. Our protagonist in that story has to catch the monkey and somehow figure out how the revolver got into the enclosure in the first place.
Winslow is an outspoken anti-Trumper. In fact, in 2020, he vowed never to write another book until he took down Trump — and you get see some of that politics coming through in the last story, The Last Ride, which deals with children being separated from their parents at the Mexican border.
Anyway, it’s a fine, plot-driven collection of stories that will surely set the adrenaline up on high. Every story is a gut punch in some shape or form, filled with characters that are breaking the rules to do what’s right. If you are looking to read some fantastic crime noir with characters that are easy to root for, look no further.
