There were some great twists and surprises in this one and I have hope for the sequel. For the first half, I was worried it was destined to be a b-movie plot with some harlequin romance thrown in.

It was ok. So much technical jargon, the mystery almost got lost.

BIPOC Mystery Thriller Police Procedural featuring a Homeland Security agent who enlists a professor and quirky private security expert despite their troubled past to untangle a killer's mysterious patterns.

5/5 stars: This is the first entry in Deaver & Maldonado's Sanchez & Heron series which is a BIPOC Mystery Thriller Police Procedural that features a Homeland Security agent who enlists a professor, private security expert and hacker, despite their troubled past, to help her unravel encrypted clues and untangle a killer's mysterious pattern. They'll soon find themselves in the midst of a lethal chess match and will discover something far more sinister afoot. With plenty of twists and turns, Deaver & Maldonado's write a gripping fast-paced investigative tale that will leave you on the edge of your seat until the final reveal. I really appreciate how Deaver & Maldonado's plot unfolds and the deft way they wove everything together. As always, Maldonado's law enforcement experience shines through. And I really liked how they used hacking and intrusion testing (pen tests) in the plot. Told in multiple POV, that also includes the killer's, Deaver & Maldonado's writing and character work are excellent; the characters are well-rounded and complex. Carmen Sanchez and Jake Heron are an interesting pair and I really liked getting to know them and see them work together. Deaver & Maldonado's touch on some very serious topics; so take care and check the CWs. I very much look forward to reading more from this writing duo in the future. Highly recommend!

I received this eARC thanks to Thomas & Mercer in exchange for an honest review. Publishing dates are subject to change.

Classic Deaver

I hadn't read any JD for a long time, and any IM ever, so this was quite a pleasant surprise. Taut plotting, great dialogue, intricate plotting, the works. I quite enjoyed this.

Fatal Intrision is a fascinating collaboration between two masterful writers. Engaging from page one, this thriller follows the investigation of a Southern California serial killer and the unlikely duo who are on the hunt to end his reign of terror.

Maldonado and Deaver are a fantastic team, and I cant wait for the next Carmen Sanchez and Jake Heron novel.
