"There is neither happiness nor misery in the world, there is only comparison of one state with another - nothing more. He who has felt the deepest grief is best able to experience supreme happiness. We must have felt what it is to die, Morrel. that we may appreciate the enjoyments of living."

i don't think this book will ever be over for me. took me almost two years to finish it because i decided to read it in english (not my native language) and also the first published translation (?? who knows what's wrong with me). so this book went through a lot of things with me and will forever be a part of me.

Surprisingly readable for a classic of this magnitude. Robin Buss put his entire Bussy in the translation for sure.

I found the premise and intro to Dantes' plight quite interesting, but the entire middle of the book where the plot was at its most entangled felt bogged down and bloated with what I will uncharitably call power fantasy and faux mystery, rather than being genuinely mysterious or impressive. The POVs could have been better employed to this end, I think.

While the character work was done very well, the truly heavy reliance on dialogue to push the narrative along really only worked some of the time, though it did initially make for an easier reading experience and I enjoyed it quite a bit. The novelty of it wore off rather quickly however, particularly as certain speeches grew to be pages and pages in length.

I will say the resolution was pretty satisfying, and created a nice full circle moment while preserving the myth of the Count of Monte Cristo himself.

All in all, I'm glad I read it and can appreciate it as a historical work of literature, but I'm somewhat whelmed by the execution.

Everyone should read this book, but not in middle school, haha. This is one of those amazing books, that is ruined for everyone by terrible English teachers.

> “[U]ntil the day when God will deign to reveal the future to man, all human wisdom is contained in these two words,—‘Wait and hope.’”

I enjoyed this book in high school, and I loved this re-read.
