This was one of the first books I took up after I began reading/ listening actively once again. It took me several months to complete this reading.
The characters and story line were introduced to me in my childhood and mostly forgotten. It was so contrasting when the re-read caused me to replace that feeling of vengeance and retribution, I associated with the protagonist, with that of humanity and justice.

The hardest but most gratifying read I’ve ever accomplished. It is no joke that I will probably recommend this book to people by saying “just wait till you hit the 500 page mark”; and I’ll say that without joking. The origin story of Edmond Dantes, specifically how Dumas laid-out recompense into retribution, was one that actually needed the 1000+ page count to accurately elicit the lifetime long planning of the count. Piecing together call backs to characters, places, and hidden dialogue had me interacting with a novel from the 1840s like it was a modern day marvel movie. All in all, I’m glad I didn’t quit on the Count of Monte Cristo, and all time classic for the ages.

Positives
-The Count- the titular character of the story, I personally love the Count. He is super smart, though the bitterness that has overcome his life is off putting, yet made him so interesting to read. He is very isolated, yet you can sympathize with him.
-the Plot- super long, 1200+pages, yet I praise the author for its intricate plot and wide set of characters
-the relationships and side characters- I loved Maximilian and Valentine, I shipped them, I also liked Mercedes and Albert.
The writing- I honestly haven't read a ton of books from this era, but the ones I have do not have anything near as good as the writing in this book. A lot of the conversations these characters have are very deep, and include a lot of themes, and incorporate overall great dialogue.
-the fifth of September and the Fifth of October- these chapters,..... Amazing
Negatives
not many but....
-the dungeon- Edmond's imprisonment, though my only point being that this imprisonment takes place over a decade, and it felt too quick, not emphasized enough
It is lengthy, but worth every page.
The author uses amazing details to paint a picture of every setting and also a feel of the era. I also love the theme and overall arc of the characters.
It is not a classic for no reason! Deserving of the praise.
