I read this for months and now that I've finished it, I don't know what to say. I liked it, but at times it was just too darn long. On the other side I loved that every little thing has a background story, so I guess it had to be long. But the ending was kinda disappointing. Of course I get the message, but I think I would have enjoyed it more with less moral and more revenge.

It was well written, but it is a very long revenge plot book, which at times drags. It also has too many sub-plots and characters which make it a bit of a chore to follow.

I have, at long last, conquered the Count. This is an unbelievable novel, with a truly fascinating and elaborate plot. I went with Robin Buss’s translation, which absolutely flows; it’s a real feat to translate a novel while retaining its depth and style, without compromising anything that makes it entertaining or engaging to read. Despite its length, I think this book can appear deceptively simple. It is, after all, an adventure tale, and a revenge story, packed with a prison break, buried treasure, Roman bandits, nefarious schemes, Parisian balls, etc. Yet for all that, amidst the adventure, the social intrigue, and the winding plots, there is a real complexity here. This is a story about the unfathomable depths of human suffering— the loss of love, freedom, family, passion— and the highest exultations of human joy. We rail against fortune, but fortune is not ours to change. The most sublime moments of beauty are achievable only after we’ve known true despair. All that is left for us is to wait for better days, and hope that they will come soon.
