When people die, they become undead corpses locked away in caged tombs and weighed down in the dirt by the local townspeople. The King of Flesh and Bone hasn't been letting people rot
because his wife and unborn baby were killed 200 years ago
but then Ada is accidentally dragged to his court. Half dead, confused, and not at all here for whatever Enash is trying to do with her, it's not long before we find ourselves in an enemies to lovers situation.

The characters are interesting, most of the lore/world building makes sense, and I enjoyed it overall.
It ends on a cliff hanger at the height of the action.

TW:
non consensual body betrayal/manipulation -
Enash withholds resources/literal body heat in exchange for her submitting to their mutual sexual attraction. This happens while she still hates him, and she says "No"

Originally rated this book 2.5 because it’s not good writing. Too fast. Some plot holes. But months later I cant stop thinking about it. I use this book to find similar books (story/genre wise)

At least 3 book groups have recommended "King of Flesh and Bone," so I was very excited to get an audiobook from Netgalley for this one. I made it about 18% before I just couldn't take anymore. When it comes to smutty romance, I think I'm just picky. Hearing a woman do a sexy male voice by adding breathiness just didn't do it for me. Once it gets to the male PoV, the narrator changes-- but I just couldn't get into it.

I decided to restart and re-read the whole thing on Kindle Unlimited-- and I'm glad I gave this one a shot. This is a dark romance Beauty and the Beast retelling with a bit of Hades/Persephone thrown in. Because the lead male is a god that is the king of rot, I was also reminded of Raven Kennedy's Plated Prisoner series. It makes for a good combination :).

"King of Flesh and Bone" ends in a cliffhanger that takes about 40% of book two to get resolution for. Good to know that this is a duology though and both books have been published.

Make sure to check trigger warnings before reading this one, there are a lot of dark elements. Also, lots of obsession with having a baby. I think I've hit my baby book quota for the next month after this book.

Thank you Netgalley and Dreamscape media for an audio copy of this book. My rating is based on the content of the book, and not the audiobook itself (or else this book would have definitely been a DNF for me).

2.5 stars

Firstly, thank you NetGalley for sending me this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

Now. I want to start by saying this seemed up my alley. I really thought I would love this. I don’t know what happened.

I mean I do know what happened but I couldn’t wrap my head around why.

He was so abusive to her, not like rough sex which was present but abusive. He broke her legs several times through out, carried out acts she wasn’t comfortable with, and overall treated her like s**t. Except for the rare moments he didn’t. It was like Stockholm syndrome unraveling before my eyes.

Now, yes, I understand some people really enjoyed it. I found the fantasy portion of this novel to be interesting enough and I might even pick up the second novel if I can get over this one but their relationship never blossomed enough for the conflict to entice a reaction out of the reader. I surely feel awful for Ada but I could care less about the King.

Overall, this might have been a tad bit too much for me.
