FIRST OFF: THIS IS NOT A ROMANCE NOVEL. THAT’S NOT THE POINT, AND IF YOU CAME OUT OF MP THINKING THE ROMANCE WAS THE POINT YOU’RE W R O N G
um anyway this is kinda complicated bc Fanny is literally the most annoying person on the planet but also there were some super interesting themes throughout and like as far as literary analysis goes it’s great but plot character no
except I actually have the most toxic crush on Henry Crawford but whatever
also wtf for Fanny not marrying Henry like hun that man is hot and rich and will probably get tired of you after six months but it’s 1816 what else do u have to live for?? take his money is what I’m saying here

An enjoyable read, but I seriously don't understand anybody who said there was strong character development in this novel.  Fanny, especially, is a static character, never making a mistake once in the whole book.  She never changes, only people's opinions of her.  They merely recognize her beauty, civility, manners, and claim to high society.  Not only this, but Austen emphasizes that these virtues come to Fanny entirely naturally, as emphasized by her younger sister Susan who stands out from her environment as having "inherited" the same gentility as her older sister without ever needing to be taught.  I disagree with anybody who calls Fanny weak, for she is strong in her dedication to her morals, but "strong" doesn't mean "good" and ultimately she is a very political character standing for the chivalry of the British upper class living in a fantastical meritocracy where everybody is ultimately given their due.

I also found the romantic element to be anticlimactic and sterile, but so is Fanny herself, so at least it's consistent.  Austen's novels are always a pleasure to read, but I have to say I enjoyed it more in the moment than once reflecting upon it.

You know that feeling where everything seems to be wrapping up nicely in a book and then you look at you still have like a hundred pages left to read? The abject terror? Jane Austen here manages the exact opposite. Just when things were finally starting to get interesting, I realize I have only 20 pages left?

Austen's usual wit and humour are present in this book, after a fashion; Mrs. Norris, Lady Bertram and Mrs. Price in particular formsuch a clever and compelling contrast. And while I waffled for a while over whether I found Fanny endearing or unbearable, she was at her best when denying Mr. Crawford. There was such potential in her use as critique of classism and propriety, of womanly duty - her protests to Mr. Crawford being written off as mere modesty and respect for her benefactor rather than any sort of will of her own - but her ultimate fate and that of those around her undermine this strength and many more of the narrative's others, and the method in which it was told undermines the careful prose that comes before it.

My least favourite Austen so far, but it remains more readable and more enjoyable than many of its contemporaries.

2 stars.

To be honest, I went into this expecting to dislike it. I've started it only because reading all of the complete novels by Jane Austen is a goal I have (one more to go!).

However, I quite enjoyed myself and ended up appreciating Fanny's character so much. She is NOT weak as so many call her, she is NOT unworthy. She is someone who was treated as disposable by her own family, someone who had to hear since she had been 10 years old that she is inferior, that she should feel lucky to have the bare minimum. She is someone who struggles with anxiety and is physically weak because of the neglect and emotional abuse she had to go through. Not everyone ends up being feisty and sassy and badass after suffering. It's good to think that people go through hardships in different ways. No need to invalidate anyone.

And still, she is strong in her own way. Her moral compass is intact. She doesn't talk too much, but she observes. She knows what she wants, and doesn't let others to manipulate her into doing anything she doesn't wish to do. I really admire her.

Not gonna lie, the romance was the weakest point of the novel, since it was underdeveloped and practically happened in the last chapter.
