3.5 stars. It was really creative if a bit random at times. Overall enjoyed it!

I've truly enjoyed the world-building and the plot of this book, all the scenery and the characters, but I just couldn't understand what the author wanted with the protagonist. I didn't understand why she was the way she was and why she trusted some people. I think the author was confused about Ophelia's personality and it really shows.
3 stars for the intriguing world.

so enjoyable!!!! i found myself shouting “YOU GO GIRL!!!” during the last couple chapter lol #girlboss

edit: As to why the most popular reviews of this book are negative; it’s beyond me. Ophelia has so much room for growth, and I think that’s why I’m so drawn to her character. She goes through a lot of character development, and I have a feeling she’s not done. Honestly, I don’t care how similar to Harry Potter this book is. I haven’t read Harry Potter, and I never will. Rowling disgusts me. I grew up ready Percy Jackson and the Olympians; so I’ll just stick to that. As for the way they talk, it literally isn’t comparable to modern language because it takes place in the future?? It reminds me of Emma and Pride and Prejudice in terms of dialogue.
I do however agree that a lot of the descriptions are repetitive. However, I feel like that was more of a choice for Ophelia’s character noticing these details about people, rather than the authors writing choice.
I don’t understand how people can think the Animists are matriarchal. I don’t see where they get that from. I do despise Thorn as a love interest, but I think that he will have a redemption arc in the future books. He’s JUST as bad as Ophelia. They both are in serious need of character development. Their heads are stuck up their asses and it’s SOOO frustrating sometimes. Ophelia is getting herself together by the end of the book but Thorn is a stubborn bastard (lol).

Idk if I loved this but I do feel strongly compelled to read the next one

The characters are so infuriating that I can't read this. I might try again later but from the main characters to her family to her fiancé to his family. This book is making me mad while reading it. Maybe I'm used to main characters standing up for themselves and fighting back against people that wronged them.
medium-paced

It was, at first, difficult for me to like the FMC, with all her awkwardness, but she- and all the characters, honestly- grew on me. A little steam-punk, a little magic, a very interesting mythology: this is a recipe for a series I will continue.

For the first 40% of the book, I was unsure if it would be the book for me. The worldbuilding and magic systems were interesting, and the political intrigue bubbling in the background kept me interested, I was a little put off by the YA tropes being used to characterize the main character and her love interest. I was interested enough to finish the book, but I wasn't sure if I would read anymore afterwards.

However! I was delighted by the twists and, most importantly, by character development towards the second half of the book until the end. While Ophelia is presented as a really milquetoast, stereotypical YA protagonist, I feel that it is actually used to tell a compelling story, and the events of the book set her up to become someone with more depth and intrigue in future entries. Her personality actually did cause very real repercussions for her! The stakes were high, and the book did deliver on the consequences of her (and other's) mistakes.

I think that the severity and danger of Ophelia's position was well highlighted by the narrative. During her stint as a valet, its very clearly shown that If she won't value herself and take the reigns of her life, she will be forever abused and pushed around, with the very real risk that she will be discarded once the Pole is finished with her.

I really was surprised to see the story setting up Ophelia for a real comeback! She read like a totally different character at the end of the book, with good reason!

I'm looking forward to the next entry!
