Before I start, I realize I am in the minority with this opinion but I don’t think this was the book for me. It was very wordy but would give you zero explanation of what some things were. The main character just needed more agency or personality so that you were pushing for her to fight back more but she seems to have almost no reaction to anything. All I really know is that she is small and clumsy, whereas Thorn is big, like possibly comically big in comparison. Not to mention for it being a story based on her ability to read the history of things this comes into play like twice. Also the villain (?) all I could picture was little Gideon from Gravity Falls. That being said, I do want to know how the second book goes, but I think the internet hyped up this book a bit too much.
PS- I just came to this realization to sum up how this book feels. It feels a lot like a side story from Game of Thrones (like a Greyjoy side story or that one season where Dany really doesn’t do anything until Tyrion shows up) but you don’t really get the chance to jump back to other side stories to keep things feeling fast paced, so you have to get through all the minute portions of the story without any reprieve, so when something finally does happen the pay off is not worth it.

Interesting. Slow paced. Character driven - but I am not 100% sure I like the FMC. I will give the next book in the series a try. I like the magic system, I think it is unique.

This was hands down my favorite read of the year. This is some of the most exciting world building I’ve ever encountered, with a charming, hapless protagonist dropped into a viper’s den of illusion, lies, intrigue, and capricious factions. I can’t remember the last time I lost this much sleep reading a book, trying to anticipate the next betrayal. You’re crazy if you don’t pick up this series.
j’ai adoré ce tome bien qu’introductif

I wanted to REALLY like this book. I wanna say a lot happened because it did but I think the way sentences were organized made it hard to understand the stakes. This may be an effect of translation. It made tension development between characters feel flimsier than they were supposed to be. I might give the second book a shot, just to see but *shrug* idk yet
