The original hero's journey
Wilson’s translation is breezy and vivid. I admit that my eyes kind of skimmed over during Odysseus’s many tall tales, they didn’t seem linguistically artificial in a way that would convey persuasion to a modern reader. It’s always interesting returning to this work and seeing how eternal its themes of justice and personal vengeance are. I kind of prefer the sleepy investigative Telemachy to the grandiose war plans of Odysseus, the descriptions of the hospitality seem stronger in the Telemachy portion. Or that might be an effect of me trying to read faster because the Odysseus portions and Penelope are of course more familiar from the Western literature canon, while the deeds of Telemachus feel fresh and novel.
I can't believe I've only just got around to reading the whole thing. It's so fascinating! I found Wilson's translation enjoyable to read.
