Still highly intrigued even if this one wasn't as great.

Good volume, but I think I let a bit too much time go by between reading the first one and this one because I was a little out of it with what was going on with the family.

Brutal and dark. But also kind of awesome. So confused storytelling choices. The switch of focus and flashbacks would be easier with more words. And by that I don't mean counts of carlyles or serfs or waste. I'd like to see more depth of character exploration but I don't that's what I'm going to get.

The second volume in the series is a bit more engrossing. Rucka throws flashbacks of Forever's dealings with her "father" which encourages the reader to be more active in sussing out their relationship. As Rucka becomes more comfortable with the world he has built, he adds double and triple crosses. The reader is also encouraged to ask himself how complicit Forever is in family's actions.

The introduction of the family was good and the flashbacks with our heroine were heartbreaking. I just wish the art was cleaner, it's really hard to tell people apart! Still, intriguing world and I hope Forever escapes the shackles of her family.
