As someone who is quite fond of horror A Serious House on Serious Hill has been on my to be read for a while. The art is of course stunning but when it comes to writing as a work of horror it falls a little flat. Yes murder and rape are scary but turning multiple characters into murderers and rapist gets stale after a bit. I enjoyed the Amadeus bits much more than Batman which is rather shocking but I understand what Morrison was going for with Batman. I just personally did not find it that interesting. The best part is by far the end with Dent and I just wish the rest of the book had that same emotional sincerity.

To be perfectly honest, my only real problem was with the font that the Joker's dialogue is written in. That might even be caused by my poor eyesight. Otherwise, the art was great and there was absolutely nothing bad about this book.
Utterly extraordinary art from Dave McKean. Skeletal and simple Batman story from Morrison, but conveyed with astonishing force and brutality.
This is almost a coffee table art book.

I liked this, but wasn't blown away like I expected. The watercolors were gorgeous. But they were also very dark - I mean literally dark - and very hard to make out. The detail got lost. What's more, Morrison's story is weak here. If it weren't Grant Morrison I'd say the art carried it, but I don't think I'm allowed to say that about Grant Morrison.
Some parts of it were really good. I loved the premise, and I loved Batman having to do word association, for example. I liked the HP Lovecraft connection, and this story as a true horror tale. More of this could and should be done with Batman. But the innuendoes and references weren't even obscure; they were minute.
Sorry, I guess I'm against the tide on this one. I get why it was beloved. I liked it, but didn't love it.

Seriously creepy drawings to match an awesomely disturbing story.
