I found Arkham Asylum's artwork to be very moody (in a positive way), but at times it got in the way of the story.

First of all, it must be said that this is NOT your typical Batman story and I don't believe it was ever intended to be a typical Batman story. Once that realization sets in it is much easier to be objective about the quality of this book. The artwork, while not really to my taste, is still incredible and takes comic art to another level completely, treating the pages as individual canvases instead of the usual story boxes. The plot can be confusing if you're reading quickly and casually, but ultimately is a good, dark tale about an asylum and it's residents. Batman has always been one of the darker characters in the comic world and has always had his own demons to contend with while also dealing with those that plague his city and this book does a good job of showing readers exactly how messed up he may actually be and the emotional toll his life has taken on him. Honestly, if Grant Morrison had done this as an independent graphic novel with new characters instead of making it a Batman story it would probably be a better book. But it's good for what it is, not recommended for new Batman fans or younger readers just looking for some crime fighting action, but if you're a seasoned fan or just looking for a good psychological trip then you'll probably find something of substance here.

Insane. Madness. Truly felt some little horror, and now I want to put my phone down, and think about madness.

Probably one of most artistic Batman comics ever, as McKean’s art is very macabre to the eyes, whereas the eerie story is a mind-scarer that does hides a bit. A- (91%/Excellent)

The Joker is so incredibly gay in this and that was something I did not anticipate.

Beautifully drawn comic that drives you insane. But the story was not to my liking. Maybe trying too much
