not the best batman comic obv but i absolutely loved the illustrations !!!!!! they’re so creepy and eccentric and honestly i was a lil scared of the joker for once3 i like that this comic does genuinely make u feel like ur descending into madness bc there is so much going on all at once, nothing makes sense, and u can barely read the fuckin DIALOGUE !!!!!!!!! its an acquired taste, if u get it u get it!
Absolutely loved the art - but I will say that because of the different interpretation of the characters and the way the story flows it becomes a bit hard to keep track of the plot and who's who at times. I appreciated having the final draft with notes at the end just to see where all the villains popped up. I didn't know where Black Mask actually appeared, and had no idea Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum made an appearance. Also, Poison Ivy never shows up, so no idea why she's mentioned in the Goodreads description. All in all, I think Morrison tries to put in a bit too much symbolism, but overall it's a good story. Loved the take on Clayface and Doctor Destiny. Overall would recommend.
What's fascinating is that there really isn't much fist fighting, or secret weapons in this book. However there is still a dark, grim story that goes on in this comic. Grant Morrison gives an incredible exploration into the psyche of Batman, as well as the cast of villains to boot, which is just wonderful. Then comes Dave Mckean, who is known for his covers for the sandman stories. His artwork is phenomenal, showing a twisted, creepy, version of not only Arkham Asylum but the characters that live in it as well.
This book really pushed boundaries when it was released and there's no surprise to it. This book is an essential tale for batman and the batman mythos, as well as blending beautiful artwork with gripping writing. A true masterpiece, that should be a must own for any comic book fan.

This is the one where Joker slaps Batman’s butt.

Moderate: Chronic illness, Pedophilia, Sexual violence, Terminal illness, Blood, Medical content, Death of parent, Murder
Minor: Homophobia, Sexual assault, Transphobia, Excrement
The transphobia is how the Joker’s cross-dressing is treated.
The homophobia is implied from the AIDS portrayal of Clayface.
